Lord Mayor of Westminster, Councillor Robert Rigby

Councillor Robert Rigby has represented Regent’s Park ward since first being elected in 2010. He came into local politics to make a difference and be a strong voice for his local community and residents ensuring all are treated with respect and dignity.

Robert has been Chair of Planning and Westminster Builds, served on a wide range of committees, as well as being Deputy Cabinet Member to various portfolios from Finance and Regeneration to Parking and Housing, and chaired the Lord’s Community Group.

Born in North London, he has lived in the city, in St John’s Wood, for over 35 years with his wife Emiko. He has spent his entire working life in sales and marketing within the travel sector including 20-years with Japan Airlines and is currently a consultant for Citibond, a specialist in corporate travel. He is also a school governor and trustee of several charities including The London Marathon Foundation.

A keen athlete, Robert is a member of Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers, running regular 10k and cross-country races and an MCC member. His other interests including cinema, ballet, and Japan.

During his term in office as Lord Mayor, he will champion ‘inspiring activity’ with a focus on children, promoting exercise and the power of sport, especially running and cricket, as well as helping those less well off with an emphasis on the homeless. His two charities reflect this:

Cardinal Hume Centre, supporting local young people and families to escape homelessness.

MCC Foundation, cricket participation empowering girls and boys to the game and helping to inspire communities and promote physical and mental wellbeing.

The role of Lord Mayor

The Lord Mayor of Westminster is the ceremonial, non-partisan and non-executive First Citizen of Westminster. They are elected annually from among the councillors and chairs all Full Council meetings. In addition, the Lord Mayor traditionally undertakes the following duties:

1. celebrating the achievements of Westminster’s citizens and communities
2. supporting the City’s diverse communities
3. promoting Westminster locally, nationally and internationally
4. representing Westminster at important civic and ceremonial events
